More details will be announced as we have them.

Update: Garry signed this afternoon and will be available for the home game with Padiham next Wednesday.

Excellent highlights from Saturdays game can be found by clicking the link below.

AFC Liverpool video

AFC Liverpool 0 Glossop North End 2

So, having braved the trip to Tameside in mid-week, the GNE travelling army are on the march again this afternoon. This time to Valerie Park, Prescot, Merseyside – the home of Prescot Cables FC. This is worthy of a little explanation.

As many of my dear readers will know, Prescot Cables were founder members of the North West Counties League so it would seem to be no surprise that the mighty GNE are playing here. However, it should be noted that Prescot Cables were promoted to the Northern Premier League at the end of the 2002/03 season and later went on to play in the Premier Division of what we now know as the Unibond League. They are currently in the Unibond North. So, what are we doing here? Well, this is quite a good story.

We are here for a replay of the Vodkat League cup match against AFC Liverpool, of the Vodkat League First Division, after the first match at fortress Surrey Street ended in a 0-0 draw after extra time. AFC Liverpool are a new football club in only their second season and, as yet, have no ground of their own so are obliged to “pay to play” at Valerie Park – at least for the moment as they seek opportunities to get their own ground. The links to Liverpool FC are clear and we can do worse than to quote the AFC Liverpool website to gain a better understanding:-

“AFC Liverpool is a new independent football club owned by Liverpool fans and run by Liverpool fans where everyone can buy into it and get an equal vote. A genuine grassroots, not for profit football club.
It is aimed especially at those Liverpool fans priced out of Premier League football. Same colours, same songs, same community of Reds.
It draws its support base from Liverpool fans. AFC Liverpool fans still support Liverpool and those who can afford to will still go to Anfield to support the Reds. The club is meant as a grassroots addition to Liverpool FC, not to be a replacement for it. We see ourselves very much as part of the LFC family – LFC’s little brother.
The average age of a Premiership fan is 43, so we need a way to get kids hooked into experiencing football at an actual match, surrounded by a passionate LFC community.”

Just to emphasise this last point. At the first match, your ageing scribe was in conversation with one of the travelling AFC Liverpool supporters, a passionate follower of Liverpool FC who, with his two young sons, was completely priced out of Anfield. AFC Liverpool is his way of getting his sons involved in live football and to satisfy his own wishes to be associated in some way with Liverpool FC – excellent.

There are some parallels here with other “breakaway teams” such as AFC Wimbledon and FC United of Manchester. Although having said that, every circumstance is different. In the case of AFC Liverpool, there seems to be far less acrimony (in fact none if you talk to the supporters) towards Liverpool FC than, for example, FCUM seem to have towards MUFC even though there are certain similarities relating to foreign ownership and high ticket pricing. Without any disrespect to the supporters of AFC Wimbledon and FCUM, the story of AFC Liverpool is refreshing and to be commended.
Your ageing scribe begins matchday in Fleetwood – the day dawns, just about, after overnight frost and freezing fog. This does not look good! Anxious text messages are exchanged – good invention the text message don’t you think? – and, finally, whilst sitting in the Wetherspoons in Fleetwood with a pint of Orkney Red McGregor – a malty, flavoursome ale, highly recommended, confirmation comes that the match is on – excellent news.
Arrive in Prescot to find that the pre- determined refreshment venue is deserted. A quick exchange of text messages establishes that the GNE travelling army are located at an alternative venue – the benefits of text messaging again! Seems that the first venue refused admission to one of our younger supporters. Somewhat misguided that in that in these constrained economic times trade is important to keep cash coming in – “cash is king” as we all know. Anyway, their loss.
£5 entrance and £1.50 for a very good programme with lots of information and articles. The only “issue” is that the programme was written and printed in anticipation of this match going ahead on Wednesday 3rd February and now it is Saturday 20th February. No real criticism here as the match on February 3rd was postponed and, in these constrained economic times, you just cannot throw away the programmes and start again. The AFC Liverpool programme was Vodkat League Programme of the Year in season 2008-09. Sadly, not eligible for the unofficial GNE away Programme of the Season this season as we only consider Premier League clubs. Pies said to be “not bad” but with an unusual ratio of the “chewiness” of the pastry between the inside and the outside – excellent detail here. We are later informed that only 40 pies were ordered for the day but nobody goes hungry as there are plenty of alternative delights to tempt the always discerning palates of our supporters.
As said above, this is the Prescot Cables ground so must, presumably, pass inspections for Step 4. Excellent stand with seating above the well appointed clubhouse. Elsewhere, the ground is not fully enclosed and the grassy areas to the three sides have signs which declare that “spectators are not allowed” – wonder who or what is then? Our flags are positioned in the upper level of the stand – a six flag day - and are then deserted as the GNE travelling army of 65 or so from a crowd of 152 move around the ground.
The teams trot out onto a heavy pitch – GNE in white. Some good natured banter between the two sets of fans enlivens the first half which ends up scoreless. During half time, the question of who is allowed on the grass banks is perhaps answered as a 15 –a-side game featuring local kids kicks off. Into the second half and the stalemate is broken as “father” Young converts a penalty. A further goal late in the match secures a 2-0 victory for the Hillmen and progress in this cup competition.
As a satisfied group of supporters retire to the well appointed clubhouse, thoughts turn to New Mills on Monday night. However, as I write this, a couple of inches of snow have fallen overnight and the snow is still coming down - tomorrow's game must be in some doubt. So much for global warming, or is it? One day, I might devote one of these short narratives to the science of climate change but only by request – don’t all shout at once!

Droylsden A Glossop North End A

In the words of the not quite immortal Mr. Bob Hite, the GNE travelling army are “On the Road Again”. Due to the vagaries of the weather and the peculiarities of the fixture computer, this is our first away day since that day in deepest Leicestershire on December 5th – apologies for reviving memories of that one! The frustration of this enforced lay-off is perhaps similar to how injured football players feel when they are in the process of recovery but not quite yet ready to step back into action. I say perhaps because, to be honest, it’s been that long ago I can’t really remember!

Talking of memory, who remembers the Local Government Act of 1972? Don’t all shout at once! Although we may think that we know nothing about this particular bit of political jiggery pokery, in fact we do, or at least we know the consequences of it.

This Act of Parliament was all to do with local government reform and came into effect on April 1st 1974. Anyone who seriously thought that any legislation introduced to be effective from April Fools Day would be welcomed with open arms was a long way away from the beating pulse of the British people.

Well, what’s it all about (asks your ageing scribe as he only just prevents himself from adding the almost obligatory “Alfie” at the end of the question)? In short, this Act redefined in an almost cavalier way the concept of counties and districts, which we had understood for close to 100 years, in the sense of local government. Amongst the biggest shake up was in Wales where the historic 13 counties were simply deleted from the local government map and replaced by 8 new ones. In effect, goodbye to counties such as Merionethshire, Radnorshire etc. and hello to Gwynedd, Powys and friends. Just a note here, for those struggling with the Welsh pronunciation I refer you to the Supporters Club Chairman of Vice who is fluent (or is that fluid?) in Welsh. Who says that these Supporters Club chaps (and chapesses I suppose to fall in with current politically correct thinking) are not multi-talented? In England also, traditional counties, such as Rutland, disappeared and new ones, for example, Avon were invented. So, at a stroke, 100 or so years of the history of this green and pleasant land of ours were expunged on the whim of meddling bureaucrats for whom the only concept of the term “status quo” is related to a certain rock band. Having said that, Status Quo have demonstrated far greater longevity than many a misguided Act of Parliament.

Moving closer to home, the effect of the Local Government Act of 1972 was to create Tameside – one of the towns of which, as we know, is Droylsden. Now, at the time, many residents of the towns which were subsumed into Tameside were less than happy. In my own case I was born in Stalybridge, Cheshire (OK, don’t mock, somebody had to be born there although judging by what I see today, most people have escaped – just like me). And believe me; nobody was going to write their postal address as Stalybridge, Tameside. Call it one-upmanship if you like with the often desperate (and sometimes disparate) residents of Stalybridge wishing to be more associated with the upmarket towns and villages of genteel Cheshire than “smelly” Ashton and all those other places “on the way to Manchester”.

Coming back to Glossop, it is said that the then residents of Glossop had a choice to join in with Tameside or to remain in Derbyshire. Your ageing scribe was not around Glossop at the time so has no personal recollection of this however, anecdotally, it seems that the residents of Glossop wished to remain in Derbyshire and, in an act of democracy unlikely to be repeated today, their wish was granted. Did this decision have any consequences? Yes it did! From this time we can trace the history of the Tameside and Glossop Primary Care Trust which means that critically ill people of Glossop have to travel by ambulance to Tameside Hospital (which used to be Ashton Hospital) for treatment – a horrendous journey thru’ the Glossop Crawl, which is likely to get worse before it gets better as prospects for the Longdendale By-Pass (and associated Glossop Spur) fade slowly into the distance despite some efforts in Greater Manchester to revive the plans. And don’t get me going about the controversy currently surrounding Tameside Hospital otherwise we could be here for a very long time and the dog needs a walk.
Another consequence of remaining in Derbyshire was brought home to me the other week. A friend of mind (yes, I do have one or two!) reported to the police that his caravan had been broken into. After some delay, a forensic team arrived on the scene to do the normal type of investigation, fingerprints and that sort of thing. In conversation, it turned out that the forensic team had travelled to Glossop from Chesterfield. One of them was heard to comment “we like coming out to Glossop, it’s a nice day out for us” – especially on overtime rates!! Well, as ever dear reader, make your own mind up on that one but in these strained financial times I would have thought that we could have done better than that.

However, the GNE travelling army cross the, less than heavily fortified, border into Tameside and enter Droylsden, native town of the Supporters Club multi-talented Events Co-ordinator and the place where your ageing scribe “worked” in the university holidays a long, long time ago. Droylsden FC are members of the Conference North so are three leagues above the mighty GNE so what are we doing here? Well, this is the semi-final of the Manchester Premier Cup and a chance for us to measure up against the current “Pride of Tameside” team.

There had been some doubts during the day about this match going ahead due to persistent rain in Droylsden – and probably elsewhere in Tameside as well. Having paid £10 to get in and not being able to find a programme, the first person we encounter is our “Barry the Ground”. Barry is watching groundstaff and volunteers trying to remove excess water from the surface of the pitch and looks horrified as the methods used by some seem to involve scraping the top surface off the pitch. “Would never do that at Surrey Street” was the gist of the comment from Barry but without the more colourful bits – I leave that to your imaginations.

We retire to the well appointed clubhouse to be greeted by the “standard” array of keg “ales”. Special note here – thanks to Rhona and everybody for keeping the Longdendale Lights “burning bright” in our clubhouse. Before the match starts, an official of the home club takes on the role of MC, grabs a microphone, and announces the teams and other bits of useful information. This is a good idea and, perhaps, another job for one of our esteemed Directors when we play at Surrey Street!

“Suitably” refreshed we move outside and take up residence in the covered area behind one of the goals. Difficult to count the numbers tonight as a few of our spectators drift around the ground but a conservative estimate would put the presence of the GNE travelling army at a minimum of 75. This, on a wet and cold Monday night in February, is magnificent!!

The teams enter, onto the paddy field of a pitch, with the GNE players sporting a new kit with the “Hillmen” logo on the front – very smart. As the match kicks off, our worst fears are confirmed as the ball struggles to make progress over the sodden turf. Anyway, the match progresses and, after 45 minutes, it’s half-time. 1-0 to Droylsden.

The rain continues and puddles start to form on the pitch. After a half time interval limited to 10 minutes (now, correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t the half time interval always 10 minutes in the dim and distant past?) the teams come out again. After 5 minutes, the referee has a discussion with both captains and the match is abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch. Fair enough really and credit to all involved in getting the match started in the first place and then the attitude of the players of both sides who, whilst probably not relishing playing in such conditions, did adapt their game to try to play football and to ensure the safety of their fellow players.

Much discussion on the terraces about when this match can be re-scheduled. Some talk of next Monday but nothing is clear. Some rumblings also about conspiracy theories relating to starting the second half only so that the entrance money need not be refunded – bit harsh that perhaps. Maybe we will get a reduced entry price when the game is played again and, to be honest, that would be fair reward for the GNE travelling army who were truly magnificent tonight.

We will see…

Droylsden game ABANDONED

A game that really shouldn't have started became a farce as the rain continued to pour down. In the end, we did well to get through 50 minutes before the refereee called an end to proceedings. Droylsden were 1 up at the time.

Now for the interesting bit. Everyone expected the game to be called off at half time but incredibly the players came out for the 2nd half and played for a further 5 minutes. Why not call it half time? It wouldn't have anything to do with the stories doing the rounds at the end that as the 2nd half had kicked off spectators would not be entitled to a refund if the match was abandoned? Surely not.

It was bad enough that Droylsden were allowed to charge their full admission price of £10 for the competition and it would nothing short of scandalous if they get away with not at least offering fans a reduction for any re-arranged game.

The next Supporters Club Members meeting will be held at The George Hotel on Thursday 25th February starting at 7.30 pm.

New kit for Droylsden?

As mentioned in a previous post, GNE have a new kit and I believe they intend wearing it at Droylsden tomorrow. Having now had a sneak preview I can confirm it is an Umbro kit with the 'Hillmen 1886' logo on the front.
It'll be interesting to see supporters reactions, especially those that have recently bought replica shirts!

GNE 1 Alsager 0

After finding many different ways not to score it took a Martin Parker goal 10 minutes from time to see off Alsager Town. And what a classy goal it was!
The win moves GNE up to 8th spot with games in hand on all but Bootle above us. Ramsbottom in 2nd are 13 points in front but we have 5 games in hand and we still have to play them at home!

Quiz Night At The Star

Paul at The Star has kindly allowed us to use one of his regular Quiz Nights to raise funds for the Supporters Club nominated charity which is Buxton and Glossop friends fighting MS.

The date is Sunday 28th February.

The quiz starts at 9.30 pm and consists of 40 general knowledge questions - not too tricky. All is finished before 11 pm. The arrangements about numbers in teams is quite loose, this is done so that everybody can participate either as part of a formal team or by making up teams on the night. This is a fun quiz, run by Marcus Hodkinson, and really is quite light-hearted. Just about everybody in the Star on a Sunday night participates in the quiz which is great.

All are invited to come along to the Star on February 28th, join in the fun and, at the same time, contribute to a very worthy cause.

The more the merrier.

The Surrey Street pitch is frozen and tomorrows game with Alsager is in doubt. If the forecast is right, and the temperatures stay low, a pitch inspection will be arranged for the morning.

GNE 5 St Helens 2

A Dave Young hat trick (!) and one each from Darren Hamilton and Andy Hurst comfortably saw off a strangely subdued Saints team.
Has anyone seen a stranger hat trick than that? The 1st was an attempted cross the keeper lost in the sun which ended up in the top corner. The 2nd was, well, an attempted cross the keeper lost in the sun which ended up in the top corner. Disappointingly, the 3rd was just a plain old penalty.

And just to round things off New Mills got knocked out of the Vase. La vie est belle as they say across the water..

New kit on the way?

If the stories are to be believed, GNE will soon playing in a new kit.
It's been general knowledge that since losing the Speedwellbus sponsorship the club have wanted to remove the companys logo from the shirt and it seems as if replacing the kit is the way they have decided to go. Then again, if it's only one kit, won't we still be using the white away kit?
